Sunday Salon - October 24th

One of the joys of blogging is getting to read books before the majority of people become aware of them.  So it's always exciting to get the publisher's emails announcing a great new book and discover that you're already reading it.  Such was the case for me a couple of weeks ago when I got Penguin.com's newsletter heralding Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow, which I was reading that day.

Barnes and Noble sent an email this week, linking readers to their list of the top 100 books sold so far in 2010.  Not surprisingly, blogs favs MOCKINGJAY, THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, and THE PASSAGE are on the list.  I actually haven't read any of these but I do like to think that many of you played a part in bringing these books to the reading public's attention.

I see that my favorite indie publisher, Unbridled Books, has two books making waves on the Indie Next List.  Safe From The Sea by Peter Geye is one of their October Great Reads and Stranger Here Below by Joyce Hinnfield (which I just finished) is one of their October Notables.  Kudos to Unbridled Books!

I'm starting Outside The Ordinary World by Dori Ostermiller for a TLC Book Tour.  What are you reading this week?

  3. I just loved that Washington review! I am reading a Bill Bryson book this weekend, but haven't made a lot of progress so far. It's my first time with one of his books, but he is hysterically funny, and I am chasing my husband all over the house reading passages to him. I think he wishes I would stop it. It's called Neither Here Nor There, and it's all about Bryson's adventures in Europe. I really recommend it!

  4. I don't take in ARCs anymore but it is exciting going into a bookstore and seeing a book you read months ago! I often wonder just how much buzz bloggers create outside our little group. Need to read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this week as well as The Book Thief (re-read). Not sure I'll get either done!

    Have a good one, Lisa!
