Sunday Salon - January 16

I'm off to a great start reading this year--I've read four books, several short stories and I'm half way through another book on Librivox.  And still I can't keep up with the number of books I've added to my wish list already this year.

The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown was already on my radar but the reviews I've been reading have convinced me that it's one I want to read.  Nicole, from Linus's Blanket, reviewed American Uprising: The Untold Story of America's Largest Slave Revolt by Daniel Rasmussen a week or so ago and it ties in so well with one of my reading goals this year that I've added it to the list as well.  Anther non-fiction that's been added is The Memory Palace by Mira Bartok which really impressed Michelle, of red headed book child.  Thanks to everyone who has responded to my request for books set in other countries or written by non-U.S. writers.  I've added several books to the list including Music and Silence by Rose Tremain which was recommended by a friend of my parents who lives in Denmark and which is set in the royal court of Denmark early in the 17th century.

Coming up this week are reviews of The Gentleman Poet by Kathryn Johnson and Krushchev Remembers by Edward Crankshaw (a guest review from my dad) as well as a recap of the Omaha Bookworms discussion with Dori Ostermiller of Outside The Ordinary World and Fairy Tale Fridays where I'll be talking about The Juniper Tree (a Brothers Grimm tale) and spin of it by Alissa Nutting titled The Brother and The Bird.

What are you reading this week?  Has your wish list grown faster than your ability to read, too?

  1. Great start to the year! I have read a few reviews of the Weird Sisters and it's on my TBR list as a result! Rose Tremain is as well, any of her books really so maybe I'll read Music & Silence. I'm planning on reading a lot of classics this year - Dostoyevsky, James, Kafka, Trollope and many others...I'll see how it goes!

  3. Thanks for the mention. I have seen that book by Rose Tremain on the shelves but haven't ever picked it up to see what it's about. I have The Weird Sisters on my list as well.
I am going to finish up Wench this week and probably move on to one off my shelves. Haven't decided yet....

    Happy Sunday!

  4. I've added a ton to my to-read list too, it's sad. Including The Weird Sisters, it looks good!

  8. Sounds like a great list.
I never keep a TBR, I just never have enough time to imagine I'll read much.
Other than research I seem to manage about 10 - 12 minutes a day.

  9. I just finished the Indie Lit Fiction shortlist so I picked up The Sweet Relief of Missing Children for LT's Early Reviewers. I just started it but it's different..not different bad but different. Makes me want to read more of it.

I am loaded up with ARCs again so I will be reading quite a bit over the next few weeks.

  10. Hi Lisa,

I'm excited for this Fairy Tale Friday! I've loved "The Juniper Tree" since I was a little girl...so thrilled that you'll be talking about it, and so honored that you mentioned my inspired retelling of it.

  11. I'm trying to do a better job about not adding too many books to my shelves (or wish list) this year. I did see a review for American Uprising: The Untold Story of America's Largest Slave Revolt (not Nicole's--Jill at Rhapsody of Books) and it looks fascinating. But I've still yet to finish a book! And that baby's not even here yet!

See you're reading The Glass Castle. Hope you're enjoying!! And hope you're staying warm!

  12. Thanks for stopping by, Alissa! I really enjoyed your take on The Juniper Tree. I think I may have met that stepmother, in fact!
