Sunday Salon - January 23

As you can see from my past couple of posts, I've spent part of this weekend working on this blog.  Some of it is all but invisible to visitors (kind of like cleaning out the linen closet in your home) but I also ended up making big changes to the design of the blog.  I spent hours Friday evening and Saturday morning cleaning up my tags.  They are much better but after I had gotten about 2/3 of the way done with them, I decided I should have done them a bit differently.  Maybe next bloggiesta.  Then it was time to fix the header, something that's been bothering me since the last design change.  And that's when it all blew up on me.  By the time I got the new design set up, I was so frustrated I decided I was done with bloggiesta for this year.

I also participated in The True Book Addict's "A Winter's Respite Read-A-Thon" this past week.  I did better on that.  I read one book, several Edith Wharton short stories, two fairy tales, and got about half way through another book.

Tuesday a smaller than usual group of the Omaha Bookworms met to discuss Outside The Ordinary World with author Dori Ostermiller (we had gotten just enough snow just late enough in the day to make the roads a bit dangerous).  We always enjoy getting to pick the author's brains about the books but this time we really spent a lot of our Skype call talking with Ostermiller about a wide range of writing topics including the genesis of this book, her writing process, what she's working on know, what it's like to work with an editor.  For February we're reading Jane Goodall's Harvest for Hope, recommended by one of our members who's very knowledgeable about the food we eat.  It's definitely out of our usual comfort range but should generate a great discussion.

Coming up this week are reviews of Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, reviews of the three Edith Wharton stories, and another guest review from my dad.  I can't wait to tell you the story behind this book!  And, of course, Fairy Tale Fridays!

What are you reading this week?

  1. Everything looks great, Lisa! I'm a little jealous that your book group was able to talk with Dori Ostermiller. It sounds like you all had an interesting discussion.

I hope you have a great week, Lisa. I'm about ready to head to bed, I think. Maybe sneak in a little reading before i drift off to sleep.

  2. You did great on the read-a-thon. Much better than I did, that's for sure! Hope you enjoyed it. My next one will be in April. I'm calling it Spring's Serenity Read-A-Thon. =O)

I started reading a book called Quicksilver by Joy Spraycar yesterday and I'm not real thrilled with it. I've been skimming...a lot! I'm also reading The Monk by Matthew Lewis for a Goodreads book club and The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks for TuesBookTalk.

  3. So... you guys are finally reading Harvest for Hope! Eleanor must be thrilled. Why did I think you were reading The Heretic's Daughter? Maybe that's later this year...I will be in Australia so I can't imagine getting to finish Harvet for Hope read in the next few weeks but I will add this to my list (love Jane Goodall). I wanted to be her as a young girl - does this surprise you?

I like the new look - it's light and easy to read.

I'm so far behind on reading posts...

  4. I like the new clean look! I tried to do Bloggiesta but didn't get very far. I did much better last year when I didn't "officially" do it. I think not having the expectations on myself worked better for me! :--)

  5. I always manage to screw-up my custom header when I play with it so I opt not to touch it. Easy! Ha!

I do a little bit of maintenance on my blog each week. It's easier for me to keep it clean that way.

I may change the theme one of these days but my current theme works for me right now, so why change it?

  6. The blog looks great, and I know just how hard it is to get it just the way you like it, so kudos to you for working so hard on it!

  7. Sorry that blogger overwhelmed you. I tinker a lot with my backup blog because I make a ton of mistakes and end up making stuff disappear.

  8. I'm glad you got a lot done, despite the frustrations! It's nice to know there's another Bloggiesta just 6 months away, isn't it? I think I'll have to start making my list now!

  9. Bloggiesta was satisfying but very frustrating too. I had a blog disappearing act that nearly freaked me out, but it got settled in the end. Glad you still got a lot done.

  10. I'm SO sorry that things blew up so badly. I do like the new design, but I can only imagine how frustrated you are with everything. Good luck getting everything fixed the way you want!

  11. I agree... headers are extremely frustrating. I've been meaning to fix mine for ages, and continue to put it off and put it off. Everything around here looks great!
