Sunday Salon - September 16

I can't read. There, I've said it. For the past couple of weeks, I've been making excuses to myself as to why I haven't been doing much reading of late. Yesterday I came to the realization that I'm not getting much read because I have just not been able to make myself sit down and read. I'm reading good books and mostly I'm reading things that I've chosen to read (as opposed to books I need to read for reviews on a set date). I've never had a reading slump before when I'm getting to read whatever I want. I'm very frustrated by it!

Had something odd happen last night. I was playing catch up with my blog reader. When I clicked on Misfit Salon, a blog I've been following for a couple of years, I got the message "Blog Not Found." Not found? Must be a glitch, I thought. Tried again. Nope, same message. I emailed the blogger to let her know something was wrong. But that came back with a message that the email account does not exist. So I have two questions: does anyone know what happened to Stephanie? and has this ever happened to you? After spending so much time talking about community last week, it feels so odd to have someone I've been talking to just disappear. Bloggers, I have a favor to ask. If you're going to be leaving us, please, please give us a chance to say goodbye!

This week I'm reading Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken for the Omaha Bookworms September meeting. We're very excited to be doing something different this month; we had gotten the idea that we wanted to find a book that would appeal to multiple generations, men and women. One of our members suggested this book and I think it will make for great discussion. I'm really looking forward to having some of our parents join us!

I'll also try to work in some more of The Little Stranger for the R.I.P. VII readalong hosted by The Estella Society. Of course, I'm behind already, what with my reading slump. What are you reading this week?

Even with my reading slump, I've been enjoying planning what I'm going to read. I can't wait to get to the other things I've planned for R.I.P. and for Fall Feasting. That means that I'm going to come out of this slump soon, right? Are there things that have worked for you when you've been in a slump?

  1. Hope you get over the reading slump soon. I had a bit of a slump recently which was probably due to the busy Summer holiday period. I've been going back to my comfort zone genre which is crime mystery. I'm still reading Paganini's Ghost- Paul Adam - set in Italy and learning something new along the way about violin-making and restoring and antique dealing.
    Have a good week, Lisa!

  2. I am reading State of Wonder by Patchett which is disappointing because I love her writing and this book is a chore to read and Book Group is Wednesday. I am also listening to The Chaperone, it has not swept me away yet.

  3. Don't push yourself with the reading. It'll come back if you take it easy.

I'm not familiar with that blog but am surprised she deleted it and her email. Wow!

  4. Oh I know, it's awful to have a reading slump! I have only read TWO books this entire month and that is fewer than in five years! It feels like an illness or something! I hope we recover soon! :--)

  5. I have been reading the same book for two weeks, just slowly reading a chapter a day. Enjoying life beyond the internet/laptop :)

    Have a fabulous Sunday Lisa!!!!

  6. If this is your first reading slump then you've done incredibly well! I don't know Stephanie but if she left with a goodbye hopefully she's alright. Best thing to do in a slump is relax. Your want to read will come back soon enough.

  7. I was having a terrible time getting interested in an audiobook, but finally settled into The Passage by Justin Cronin and now I can't find enough hours in the day to get back to my Nano to listen!! I hate it when I'm in a slump, but I always know it will eventually end.

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. Nice to meet another local! :)

  8. Sorry to hear about your slump. I hate that! And I agree, I hate it when someone disappears from the blogging world without a word. Scary stuff.

I guess I must be having an UP reading week. I finished The Little Stranger so fast, and have now finished a couple of other books too. I guess I'll enjoy it while it lasts. Good luck to you, it will end! :)

  9. I've been in a slump for most of this year. I read for a while, drop off, then come back. It's been frustrating. I think at times like this, the best thing I can tell myself is to listen to my head and body. If it's not in mood, I try not to push it. I hope you get your mojo back!

  10. I know my reading has slowed in the past few weeks now that I've gotten busy. I just don't want to sit down with a book until I crawl into bed, and when I do that, I can only read for 30 minutes or so. I'm sure that feeling will come back again for both of us. In the meantime, we need to enjoy some of our other favorite activities.

  11. I hope you find out where she went. If I ever decided to quit blogging I would certainly make sure that my friends knew unless of course, it was something out of my control.

I'm with you in regards to the reading slump. Life at work has been overwhelming due to losing a secretary in the office and now I'm covering in there, working my library, helping with 700+ iPads, and just basically going, going, going all day long. By the time I come home, get dinner done, correct papers for a teacher...I am whipped!!!

Hang in there...we will rebound!! :D

  12. Lisa, I have those slumps as well -- we all do. One day you'll wake up and you'll be back to normal.

I know what you mean about MISFIT SALON. I also use to read Stephanie's Blog, and it is sad when people disappear without a word. That happen with (2) other bloggers I followed over the last (4) years.

    You have a great week.

  13. I have yet to read Unbroken but have heard good things. When bloggers disappear it is sad, you hope everything is ok.

  14. I hope you get over the reading slump soon. I don't know anything about Misfit Salon...unfortunately, but that is sad that it is just gone. Wonder what happened to her.

Unbroken is a book I got my friend and fellow blogger Anna at Diary of an Eccentric. I don't think she's read it yet.

  15. I think we all go through reading slumps, at least I know I do, and it's so frustrating when you know you have all these great books to read, but can't get them read! I am also surprised to hear that one of your favorite blogs was deleted. That has happened to me on more than one occasion, and I can understand your want to have people say goodbye. It must bring on a lot of anxiety when something like this happens and you can't say goodbye.

  16. I go through phases sometimes when I am reading more or less than at other times. The lesser times can be a real bear. I want to read, but the motivation just isn't there. I usually turn to other things until the phase passes--like writing my mother. LOL It sucks when it lasts a long time.

I don't know what happened with Stephanie. :-( I'm always sad when bloggers stop blogging without warning. I do hope she's okay.

  17. You are in a reading slump, and I am in a writing slump! We'd make a good pair if we had a joint blog.

I just don't feel like reviewing the books I've read right now. Maybe because they weren't stellar reads.

I have never heard of that blog before but it's weird to me when a blog just disappears. I've often wondered if I need to elect someone to back me up if something happened to me. At least just to let everyone know what was up.

  18. I'm not familiar with the blog you're referring to but have had that happen with several other bloggers and it always makes me sad. I tend to keep their blogs in my Google Reader if they're still at least working links in hopes that someday they'll return but some of them it's been over three years now! You're right--as we become more and more connected we can't just disappear without a word! I know that SD Lisa would hunt me down if I did that. ;)

Oh I bet your book club will be fascinating with the different generations. My grandmother read and loved Unbroken but I know that it was a difficult read for her as my grandfather flew the same planes that Louie did--although he was in the European theater rather than Pacific. I really look forward to your thoughts.
