Sunday Salon - February 17

Wishing my sister-in-law a very happy birthday today!

Here's What I'm:

Listening To: The Enchantress of Florence by Salmon Rushdie. I've got the paperback as well and I've found a combination of reading and listening is necessary on this one at times. In music, I've been listening to Fitz and the Tantrums, Michael Kiwanuki, and The Sheepdogs, all of which are new to me this week.

Jim Carter, center, in Brassed Off
Watching: "Brassed Off" yesterday, starring Ewan McGregor and Pete Postlethwaite. Funny, sad, heartwarming and, Downton Abbey fans, Mr. Carson is even in it! Then Miss H and I had a girls' movie night. First we watched "Music and Lyrics" with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore then "2 Week's Notice" with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant. Lots of laughs but, unfortunately, we both now have "Pop Goes My Heart" stuck in our heads.

Reading: Midnight In Peking by Paul French and I'm back to Les Mis finally. I wish I didn't know that there was a long passage about the sewers of Paris coming up! I also read this interesting article in Fast Times magazine which The Big Guy found about the future of reading. I found hope in the fact that there were more books published in 2011 than in any previous year.

Making: progress on a kitchen reorganization project I started this week. These kinds of projects make me so happy! Here's what happens in my house when you empty a cupboard:

Planning: On working on my dining room this week as part of Project: The Things That Feed My Soul. There are so many things in this room that I love, including the glasses The Big Guy and I toasted with on our wedding day.

Grateful: that my brother-in-law and nephew came to visit from Colorado. It's the first time The Big Guy and all three of his siblings have been together in two years and the first time my nephew's been here in ten years. I know having them all with her brightened my mother-in-law's weekend.

Loving: Nivea Extended Moisture Hand Cream which has kept my fingers from cracking this winter.

Thinking: The things that happen to us (even, maybe especially, the tough times) help us become better able to help others.

Looking forward to: book club this week. We're talking to Cathy Marie Buchanan about The Painted Girls! Thanks, Mari, for lining this up for us! Have you read this book? Is there anything you'd like to ask Cathy?

I'm also starting to think about my gardens and what changes I want to make this year and when I need to start my heirloom tomato seeds.

What are you looking forward to this week?

  2. I'm looking forward to getting my central vac fixed this week (at least I HOPE it's this week)... pretty pathetic, huh?

Your kitchen cupboard look great, and I still have our wedding champagne flutes on display in the dining room, too :-)

  4. Looks like you've had a busy week. Love the picture of your cat in the cupboard. Sam would be in there in a second as well. He tries to get in the full ones. Enjoy your chat for with Cathy - The Painted Girls was awesome.

  5. Sounds as if you had a good week all round. It's the half-term holiday break here. This time our daughter no 2 is taking time off work so might see more of her with a get-together at the end of the week. I'm looking forward to going to the interest groups that were cancelled because of bad weather and going somewhere new in this county with my husband. However, the weather could change again.....

  6. Love the look of your cupboards - without the cute cat. And that same thing happens to my cupboards whether they're full or empty! What a wonderful reunion for your husband. It's so nice to connect after years apart.
I want to read The Painted Girls. I hope you post a bit about your book club meeting.

Carson looks a little different in that pic from "Brassed Off"! The guy behind him with the hat stars in the British series "DCI Banks", a great show. I'm so glad you posted this photo...thanks!

I hope you have a good week and get to work on your dining room.

  8. That's a young Ewan McGregor! I haven't seen Brassed Off in years, but now I have a hankering to do so!

It sounds like you are definitely staying busy and getting things organized. I love Nivea products too. They've definitely kept my hands softer this year than in years past.

  9. I love Hugh Grant! Both of those movies were good.

Les Mis...I have such a love/hate relationship with it. Egads...long passage about the Paris sewers!? Time for more skimming.

Oooh, cutie kitty in the cupboard. =O)

I'm looking forward to not having to do my 3+ hours driving tomorrow because there's no school. Woot!

    Have a great week, Lisa.

  10. Don't you love this format? It's fun to write, time to reflect, let's people in just a smidgen.

We need to reschedule Cathy's call-in. I will send you dates - she did say we can talk at 9:30PM tomorrow but I think that's late, and she will be rushed.

  12. I have The Painted Girls but I haven't started it yet. I am so behind!

For hand cream, I love Philosophy's Pure Grace hand cream. It's like butter and it sinks in. Smells good too. I also like the Olive Butter I picked up from The Body Shop the other day and the Absinthe cream (new) that my sales girl friend was pushing. It's a hand sanitizer too but in cream form. It smells like green plants which I sort of love.
