Life: It Goes On - May 17

What a week we've had for weather - Sunday night found us taking cover in my sister's basement because of a tornado warning and Thursday night we had a frost warning and had to cover all of our new plants. It's been cold enough this week that we had to turn the heat back on. Urgh!

I had no intention of going AWOL on the blog this week. I had planned a review of The Goldfinch (including my parents' thoughts) but that just never happened. And there was meant to be a post about things to do in Nebraska and that didn't happen. And I have absolutely no excuse. I didn't entirely unplug but I certainly didn't spend much time on the computer last week.

Here's What I'm:

Listening To: I'll finish You Know When The Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon tomorrow then I'm not sure what I'll start.

Watching: "The Voice" but not a lot else. I've actually convinced BG to leave the television off more and the quiet has been wonderful.

Reading: The Invention of Wings for book club this week. I also read Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret last week which I think would make a terrific book club selection.

Making: Progress on the face lift to the front of the house. The Big Guy got all of the new lights installed and I got the chair painted. Love their new turquoise color! Still need to paint the front door. What do you think of this orange?

Planning: Continuing work on the patio face lift. Plans are fluid but barn wood will be involved in some way.

Grateful for: The more than 4" of rain we got this week; it certainly has turned my lawn lush and green.

Loving: Playing in the dirt!

Feeling: Anxious - I have been having the strangest dreams lately and I can't seem to shake the feeling they give me.

Thinking: Of making a rhubarb pie today. I harvested the first crop yesterday and made some into sauce but still have just enough for one pie.

Looking forward to: Book club!

  2. I want to read both The Invention of Wings and The Husband's Secret, so will look forward to hearing what you think.

I just loved the audio version of You Know When the Men are Gone. It's a tough act to follow, too... I remember having a hard time choosing my next audio.

  3. Hope the bad weather is on its way out. We certainly had thunderstorms at our place but nothing too bad.

Love how your patio is looking so far! I'm eager to see what color you pick for the door.

  4. The weather has been CRAZY! 99 one day and 32 a few mornings later. We spent a little bit of time in our basement on Sunday night, too. Woke up the next morning to discover a portion of our basement had "flooded." It was more like seepage thanks to a broken downspout elbow (we're hoping!!), but it sure made for a stressful Monday morning.

I got out in the yard today and dug up a million dandelions. I think I spent close to three hours weeding and my back (and knees) are killing me. I really think I need to hire a yard boy. :)

I haven't read a thing all week. I've been catching up on blogs in the evening before bed and haven't feel inspired to read my book (The Girl You Left Behind). Not exactly a slump, but a bit of a reading break.

    Have a good week!

  5. You've certainly had some unsettling weather, Lisa! However, glad that you've been able to continue with some house projects. Enjoy your book club this week and I hope you have some restful nights and no strange dreams.

  6. So sorry about your dreams. I hate feeling unsettled like that. We've had a cold snap lately too thought not quite bad enough to have to cover plants. Still not loving it though. Congratulations on not turning on the TV. Despite all my best intentions I never can quite seem too. Would you believe I've never had rhubarb? It's not something you see here very often and I've been to chicken to experiment with it on my own!

  7. Our weather is cooler this week which is great because it's commencement week. We have a gopher tearing up our yard right now. It's not even funny what the little bastard has done. My entire front yard has been dug up. My husband's traps usually work but then you have him digging hole to put traps in too and this time, this one is smart.

  8. Dreams make me anxious sometimes as well. Especially when they are so far out there and scary in ways.

  9. oh, where did you plant your rhubarb? I just asked this on my blog! We stained our deck this weekend, sounds like we are in sync :)

If you discuss The Husband's Secret, I want to join... I didn't care for that book. It could have been SO much better but still a lot to discuss.

  10. YAY! for rhubarb pie. I made one last week. and YAY for that lovely red-orange front door color. I was just about to download the audio for The Husband's Secret but have chosen We Were Liars before I know more about it from all the gushing reviews I keep seeing. AND I am looking forward to your thoughts on The Goldfinch!

  11. Winter just doesn't want to let go. I keep hearing how great "The Voice" is. Maybe someday I'll catch a season. The show will probably be over by the time I am able to. LOL

My husband promised me some plants as a Mother's Day gift, but now I'm thinking that won't happen. I'm almost afraid to ask. We're in a money hoarding phase pending news about whether or not I'll need to take time off from work for surgery. :-S Fingers crossed I'll know for sure in the next few weeks. More information than you wanted to know, I'm sure. :-)

I hope your dreams start taking you to better places. I hate how unsettling dreams can be sometimes.

Have a great rest of the week, Lisa.

  12. Can't wait to hear what you think of You Know When The Men Are Gone. I KNOW I need to listen to it but I just haven't gotten to it yet. I wonder if it's one Scott would be interested in--his brother in law is stationed at Fort Hood and I wondered if he would appreciate the connection or if it would be to "womany."

And unplugging. I finally started to tackle the feedreader this week and realized that I had unread posts from before the readathon. I didn't realize it had been a month! I'm marking most as read and hopefully starting fresh. There just doesn't seem to be enough time but there are so many other things to do.

And I think I'll send Elle up there to play in the dirt with you. She loves it. Though you are welcome to send us some rain...

Hope you're having a great week.
