The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Hound Of The Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Published 1902
Source: purchased my copy for my Nook

Summary:
When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse-and it is up to Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery of the legend. Rationalism is pitted against the supernatural and good against evil, as Sherlock Holmes tries to defeat a foe almost his equal.

Why I Read It:
Four reasons: It's a classic.
I could download it to my Nook for only $2.99
And because I love to watch these guys:

                       And these guys:

My Thoughts:
I was delighted to find, within the first few pages, that both "Sherlock" and "Elementary" have really gotten a good bead on Sherlock Holmes. He is that guy that's more than a little bit arrogant but has the goods to back it up.

I can't say I was overly impressed with the truth about the hound; I'm no Sherlock Holmes and I figured that much out early on. Now how there came to be a hound killing people I did not figure out. I don't feel bad about that. Doyle did not write the book in a way that drops clues along the way for the reader to figure out if only the reader is smart enough. We're only along for the ride and it's a fast-paced,  fun ride. You won't get much depth of character but then you can't except too much in 150 pages.

  1. I've been watching Elementary since it started and just watched the Hound of Baskervilles episode of Sherlock (I'm a little behind!). I've really enjoyed both of them so I'm glad to know they got the character right. I read some Sherlock Holmes in school but it's been awhile but I do remember being annoyed that he doesn't give the reader a chance. I have been really wanting to read this one lately and now I'll definitely have too! Great review!

  2. Wanna read, wanna read, wanna read! But I'm making myself go in order (boo at myself!) so it'll be a while before I get to this one.

  3. I love Elementary, but I haven't wanted to read the books, as one of my book club friends told me that about Doyle, that no clues are dropped and you just read until Holmes reveals all.

  4. I like Sherlock Holmes and read the complete works a few times. I enjoy them and they're good fun. It's been quite awhile since I read Hound of the Baskervilles, but I did enough the Sherlock TV take on it :)

  5. I remember being surprised at how little Sherlock appeared in this particular book. I did enjoy the story though. It was my first Doyle novel and I'm hoping to read more. I'm still more of an Agatha Christie fan. :-)

I love the show Sherlock, by the way. I haven't yet seen Elementary. I keep hoping it will appear on Netflix streaming so I can watch it at some point.
