Life: It Goes On - June 14

I am coming to you all kinds of rested and relaxed after making this a three-day weekend. Friday was fun day, Saturday was helping Miss H shop (more on that later) and getting stuff done around the house, and today is all about reading, resting and only doing what I feel like doing.

Lots of fun stuff going on in Omaha this weekend. My goal this summer is to make sure we take advantage of at least one free event every week this summer and Friday it was the Opening Ceremonies for the College World Series. It's an absolute carnival atmosphere for blocks around the stadium throughout the series with free concerts, dozens of restaurants and bars with tents nearby, more clothing vendors than I can count, and lots of activities for kids and families. This is the second year in a row we've gone to the opening ceremonies and I think my favorite part is watching those young men walk out onto the field and take in the atmosphere. Starting yesterday, it became about winning ballgames again but Friday it was about having fun and they were definitely doing that. As were we!

This weekend was also Junkstock which was one of the reasons I took off on Friday. I was disappointed that there weren't more of what I would call "raw" materials this time, not many salvage vendors. But I did get some great ideas for things I can create myself and came home with some goodies. That armadillo, by the way, was $300. Are stuffed armadillos going to be the next big thing?

This Week I'm:

Listening To: The Book of Night Women by Marlon James - great narration, really enjoying this one.

Watching: With The Big Guy out of town this week, I got to watch whatever I wanted to watch for three days but then I didn't even turn on the television most of the time he was gone.

Reading: I put aside Misery this week to let others catch up on the readalong and picked up Balm by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. Her writing is so good!

Making: See "Watching" - not much for most of the week!

Planning: This weekend's been spent planning a new work wardrobe for Miss H. Friday she accepted a job with a bank so no more restaurant "uniforms." Time for a big girl wardrobe to match a big girl job. We've picked up quite a few new pieces - now to work them in with what she already owns. Fun!

Grateful for: My kids all being in good places right now, happy and moving forward with their lives.

Enjoying: Friday traded in my Nook. I didn't necessarily need a new one but with it not holding a charge as long as it used to and the chargers being all but impossible to find (and that $50 credit I got for trading it in!), it was time to bring home a new baby. I've been having a lot of fun playing with my new model - much faster, lighter, and more gadgets. I only wish it didn't still pick up glare. But with the credit for the trade in and a gift certificate I got for Mother's Day, it was only $80 and you can't pass that up!

Feeling: I think I answered this in the first sentence - rested and relaxed!

Looking forward to: Book club this week - we'll be discussing The Rosie Project.

  1. College World Series - how fun. We always thought that we might go some year that Texas was part of it. However, not this year. That armadillo - well, it's something alright. Don't think I need one of those - there are probably some around in our area anyway. We certainly have everything else and the cicadas have started their evening and night songs now - so, so loud. The mosquitoes are flourishing, the humidity is high and it's storming outside right now. But, our drought seems to have abated. So, guess it's all good. Summer in Texas.

Congrats to your daughter on her new job. Hope you have a great week!

    1. Boy has your drought ended! You should definitely come up sometime if Texas makes it to the College World Series - and given their history it could be next year. It's quite a festive atmosphere although I think maybe the young people are enjoying it more than those of us old folks!

  2. I'm not sure I see myself paying $300 for an armadillo (or $3 for that matter). If that's the next big thing someone else can have my share. Enjoy your new Nook! I love getting new toys!

    1. I did, for a brief moment, consider that armadillo if it were cheap enough, just for conversation. But I think that $3 price of yours was more what I was thinking of paying!

  3. I hope that you post pics of what you create from the things you bought at Junkstock! I like what you bought, cool!! I'm listening to The Rosie Project on audio now. Good luck to H on her new job!

  4. It sounds like a great weekend. Shopping for the first real work wardrobe is always fun!

    1. Her biggest problem is that none of her tattoos can show so we're trying to solve the problem of covering up the two on her feet. The tattoo cover makeup doesn't work at all which kind of rules out any skirts or dresses unless she is wearing tights.

    2. That's wrong! Who has those types of rules these days? I wouldn't be able to work at all if any of my companies had such rules!!

  5. Looks like a great atmosphere in the stadium at that opening ceremony. I like your vintage hanging basket - they're not so easy to find. I would have passed on the armadillo too! Glad to hear your kids are doing well and all the best to Miss H as she starts her new job in the bank. Enjoy your book club evening and I hope there are more relaxing days this week for you.

    1. Every time I go to Junkstock I think I'll pick up a wire basket but I can never make up my mind which one to get so it was a miracle I was able to this time! I had actually picked it up, put it back and decided if it was still there when I came back it was meant to be. The tricky part was remembering which booth it was in!

  6. Ha ha ha, that armadillo! For some reason I really want him on my bookcase now ;)

So glad to hear that you had a nice long weekend, hooray!

    1. I know, right?! I was seriously thinking, at least momentarily, that he would make a great conversation piece if I could pick him up for the right price but that was at least one too many 0's for my blood. I better be able to sit on it, eat off it, or store things in it for that price!

  7. The Opening Ceremonies for the College World Series sounds like so much fun! That sounds like something my husband and I would have loved to attend.

Congratulations to Miss H on her new job! I hope she enjoys it.

The Book of Night Women is one I'm really curious about. I am glad you like it so far.

    1. I am really loving The Book of Night Women; the narrator is just marvelous. I've had the book for several years and how I am wishing I had read it sooner except for the fact that I would have missed listening to it.

  8. I loved The Rosie Project! I listened to The Rosie Effect a while ago and it was really good too. I hope there's a third one.

How great that your kids are doing so well and congrats to Miss H on the new job! How exciting for her.

That armadillo kind of freaks me out. Why would someone want that? Eeeeuck.

I finished Misery. I moved on to Mr. Mercedes. I'm not too far in yet but it's getting interesting. Hope you have a great week Lisa!

    1. Oh, Misery - soooo grisly but at the same time such a mess-with-your-brain book!

  9. You can get an anti glare scratch guard for your Nook. I did that with my daughter's Kindle Fire because the glare was a real PIA.

    1. I didn't know you could get that! Thanks - will definitely be looking for it; love to sit outside and read.

  10. Wow, that armadillo! I don't think I'll be going for it.

Your summer plan sounds like a lot of fun! Nothing better than taking part in a bunch of local events, especially when they are free as well.

    1. I think if we had armadillos up here I would look at that as a rodent but it's such a curiosity that I really was drawn to it. I've only ever seen them dead on the road!

  11. Great picture at the ball game!! We keep meaning to take the girls to the local minor league here but I'm afraid it's already hot. We're wimps. ;)

Hmmm, armadillos are a dime a dozen around these parts. Though I usually see them on the side of the road with feet up in the air rather than stuffed in someone's house. I can't imagine what would possess someone to have one!

Pretty new Nook!! I recently remembered that Elle has a "kid's" samsung tablet that she rarely uses so I plan to appropriate it when I want to read a Nook book.
