Life: It Goes On - June 28

Feeling very lazy this morning - not quite sure what to do with myself. Usually on this day every year we are headed over to an annual family reunion. This year we are foregoing it for a number of reasons; but, it feels strange not to be rushing around, trying to put together the food to take and get out of the door to be there by noon. And yet...it also feels good to be having a weekend with very little on the calendar. I know my house is appreciating it!

Friday evening I spent at Miss H's, helping her, again, get her room cleaned up. Have I mentioned how absolutely minuscule it is? Not nearly big enough for a 20 year old girl with all of her makeup, nail polish, clothes, shoes, and crafting supplies. About the time we finally get it so that it really works for her, her lease will be up. But it's always fun to spend the time with her  so I don't really mind.

Last night was our next-door neighbors annual summer party, complete with a band, fireworks, wonderful food, and a margarita machine. Good thing we only had to walk a few feet to get home!

This Week I'm:

Listening To: The last disc of The Book of Night Women by Marlon James. So, so good! I'm not sure I can launch into another book right away without being disappointed so I will probably catch up on podcasts.

Watching: Miss H and I watched the first three episodes of Orange Is The New Black on Thursday. Not sure when we'll have time to get back to it now that she'll be working regular people hours and we won't have Thursday afternoons. Yesterday I watched Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia in When A Man Loves a Woman. Love that movie!

Reading: We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas on my Nook. Really enjoying it so far; it continues the good reading streak I've got going right now. I finished Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven the other day and absolutely loved it - if I ever get around to updating my Goodreads page, it will be a five-star read. Review to come this week.

Making: Brownies, pastas, salads, steaks. Today we're grilling burgers, peaches and pineapple (thanks, Ti, for the peach idea!). Homemade ice cream will definitely be on the agenda for this week!

Planning: For the upcoming long holiday weekend. We have a neighborhood party Friday night with a potluck dinner then my folks are coming in Saturday so I'm working out a menu for that night. July decorating will get done this week in anticipation of the holiday and I will head off to pick up a few fireworks so my mom can have some fountains to watch, her favorite.

Grateful for: The largely calm response to this week's Supreme Court rulings. I feared it could get ugly on my social media pages but there has been no anger, at least none that I have had to face head on. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion but there is never any reason to say hurtful things that could damage relationships with people you care about.

Enjoying: Book club - even if we really didn't talk much about the book. We've had a lot of new ladies join us in the past few months and are just getting back to the point where we are all really comfortable together (and chatty!) again.

Feeling: Hopeful.

Looking forward to: Getting a chance to talk to Mini-me about his week in Amherst. He got back early this morning but is off sleeping now and with our work schedules, I'm not sure when we'll get to see him.

  1. I love peach desserts! They're so summery as well. Sounds like you've had a fantastic week! I get the worst book hangovers when it comes to audios. I love the idea of mixing in some bookish podcasts. Have a great week!

    1. Some of the audiobooks I've listened to, I couldn't wait to pop in another book to get the "taste" of the last one out of my mind. But some of them...much harder to pick up a new one than one you've just read. I keep wanting to listen to the narrators tell me more.

  2. Burgers, peaches, and pineapples certainly sound yum!! I have a five day weekend coming up and I am so looking forward to it. It's a good time to stay at home. Last year, we didn't get to the fireworks at the nearby lake in time and I don't know if we will try again this time, but maybe we will.

    1. The older I get, the less I care about whether or not I see fireworks. Except I do love the big ones!

  3. I absolutely loved We Are Not Ourselves... an all-consuming read and one of my favorites last year!

  4. Here, here for quiet weekends! After the insane month of June we had, I am fighting like a madwoman to keep this upcoming holiday weekend as open and unscheduled as possible. I know Holly and I need more than a weekend of downtime to recover from all of the dance recitals and then the trip to Nationals. I'm really looking forward to getting back into the kitchen, planning meals, and cooking again. It has been far too long since we've had a "normal" schedule.

I was so happy to see the mostly positive responses to last week's marriage equality ruling. It was probably the first time on social media where I wasn't running screaming in frustration because everyone was so excited and happy. Also, it proves I've done a great job of whittling down my feed to those who won't post derogatory or just plain mean posts.

    Have a great week!

    1. Yeah, I've still got a few people that I'd really like to block but some of them I really can't without it being obvious. Like my brother-in-law. I usually try to lay low with politics on Facebook but sometimes I just cannot help myself!

  5. I had a lovely unscheduled Sunday yesterday. And our heat pattern broke and it is almost cold in comparison - ha. We are getting ready for the next big trip. July will be crazy. AND I have yet to start Station Eleven - saving it for the boat and since on Kindle, easier to travel.

    1. I swear, I'm going to sneak on that boat with you one of these trips!

  6. Your plans for this Friday sound like fun!! We have plans as of yet and it's glorious.

I saw some ugliness on social media this past weekend. Not directed any anyone specifically, sort of random comments put out there for all to see but it irked me.

    1. One of my old high school friends just updated her wedding picture. I think that was her way of saying what she wanted to saw in a great way. I have no problem with people having their opinions, they just don't need to be ugly about it.

  7. Your mention of daughter and all her make-up reminded me of last night when my daughter told me her friend Olivia is so pretty--because she gets to wear make-up. Olivia is four and a half. *Sigh*

I watched the first episode of the new season of Orange is the New Black this past weekend and enjoyed it. I'm eager to get to the rest.

I hope you have a good week, Lisa!

    1. Now that Miss H has a big girl job we don't have our Thursday afternoons for binge watching. We're going to have to find a new time to watch OITNB!

  8. I enjoy your Life posts!! I have watched the first episode of Orange OINTB and look forward to watching the rest of the seaons. Glad to hear Station Eleven is a 5 star review!

    1. I can't wait to find time for OINTB again - although I'm not loving Piper this season.

  9. Great pictures of the fireworks!! I think this will be the first year that Elle can enjoy the fireworks without being scared...looking forward to experiencing that with her. And grilled peaches! Yum!!! Would be perfect with some homemade vanilla ice cream.

I have both Station Eleven and We Are Not Ourselves on my ereader (get my new Kindle today!!) and need to read both soon. For some reason I pleasure-delay these kinds of books...which is so silly! I'm almost finished with A Visit from the Goon Squad and am really enjoying it. Have you read that one?

    Have a great week!!

    1. I haven't read Goon Squad but I've had it for years. I need to go pull it off the shelf while I'm thinking about it.

  10. We're almost done with season 3 of Orange is the New Black--interesting season. Lots of back stories, not just the prisoners but the guards as well. Some heartbreaking stories, some frustrating characters (I'm not liking Piper these days!), but still so well done.

The other TV show that I am loving is The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt--sounds totally off the wall, and it is, but so funny and feel good.

    1. Ditto about Piper. But there are so many other characters I really have grown attached to - who would ever have imagined that I would start to feel warm fuzzies for Boo?!

  11. Sounds like an exciting summer so far! The Book of Night Women sounds really good so I think I'll put that one on my list. Have a great 4th of July!

    1. The Book of Night Women is fairly graphic, very raw but so, so good!
