Top Ten Tuesday - Ten Books I've Read Set Outside the US

I missed this theme a couple of weeks ago but thought it was too good a topic to pass up. I love books that take me to places I've never been. Like Katherine of I Wished I Lived In A Library, I'm going to exclude England because I could fill the list just from there (I mean, Jane Austen, the Brontes, Dickens).

1. Italy - Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
2. Kenya - Cocktail Hour Under The Tree of Forgetfulness by Alexandra Fuller
3. Russia - City of Thieves by David Benioff
4. Jamaica - The Book of Night Women by Marlon James
5. Bangladesh - A Golden Age by Tahmima Anam
6. Germany - City of Women by David Gillham
7. Canada - The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay
8. India - The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar
9. Chili - Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende 1
10. Ireland - Faithful Place by Tara French 1
11. Iran - Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
12. Afghanistan - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
13. Greece - Eleni by Nicholas Gage
14. Vietnam - The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli
15. Sierra Leone - A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of A Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah

Oops - got a little carried away there! I could easily keep adding new countries - I've read so many great books from all over the world. This is a good reminder to keep looking for books set outside of the U.S. and England! Do you have a favorite country to read about?

  1. Great choices! I recently finished listening to Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight and immediate added Cocktail Hour Under The Tree of Forgetfulness to my list.

    1. I can't decide which of those books I liked better!

  2. The United Kingdom would be a given for me as well. You've listed some great books. The Lotus Eaters is one of my all time favorite books. The Space Between Us is another really good one.

    1. I think part of the reason I enjoyed The Lotus Eaters so much was because I went into it with no expectations at all.

  3. If I hadn't excluded England I'm pretty sure my list would have been the same. I have Daughter of Fortune on my TBR but I didn't realize it took place in Chili. That makes me more interested! I so badly need to read Tana French. Her books sound amazing!

    1. Most of Allende's early books take place, at least part of the time, in Chili.

  4. You have a great list here and have given me some ideas for geographically expanding my reading.

Being from Canada, I was eager to see what you included for us. Unfortunately, although Ami McKay lives in Canada, The Virgin Cure was set in 1860 Manhattan. Maybe you were thinking of The Birth House which was set in Nova Scotia?

    1. I totally did mean The Birth House! Which I absolutely loved and which lead to one of the best book club discussions we ever had.

  5. Great list! Ah, Italy. I read Beautiful Ruins simply because of the cover and the real thing is as exquisite, well, more so! City of Women looks really good and I haven't read much set in Germany, actually. I love books about Ireland, both the city gritty and the country peaty. I need to remember to do Top Ten Tuesday myself, as it's always one of my favorites memes.

    1. City of Women is a tough read about life in Germany during WWII from the point of view of a non-Jewish person which was different for me.

  6. You mean we can go back and do these posts?!? Why have I never done this! The past 2 weeks had fantastic themes but I didn't get to them in time! {face palm!}

Like you I would leave off England specifically for those 4 authors - Austen, Brontes, Dickens! You've got some solid gems on your list, like The Kite Runner and Daughters of Fortune!

    1. Yes! I often go back and grab something I didn't do before, especially if the one for that week really doesn't work for me.
