I read a contemporary UK one once and the characters were so blunt. I had this book but returned it because I had read too many romances by then and was burned out besides having a stack to get through. I'll give it another go another time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605456781483914021.post-69011205650758056572016-07-11T12:18:04.386-05:002016-07-11T12:18:04.386-05:00Aww, thanks for the kind words, Lisa! Mothering Sunday is the most beautiful book I've read this year and my favorite author discovery in quite some time. How lucky to have a copy appear in your mailbox! I'm hoping to read Last Orders (or one of his other novels) before the year is over.JoAnnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13691864361197071517noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605456781483914021.post-14259458782156041532016-07-11T11:28:08.895-05:002016-07-11T11:28:08.895-05:00I think I've read one book by Graham Swift (Wa...I think I've read one book by Graham Swift (Waterland)...I remember the writing was beautiful but dark. So glad you enjoyed it. And I know what you mean - you can just tell when its a British author writing the story - the feel to it embodies the UK. The same goes with Japanese writers - there is just something about the way they write that depicts a loneliness and detachment that is so vivid.
