It was such a sad story that gripped you from the beginning. I loved your review of it and the fact that you will reread it again at some point. I love to reread certain books, too - those are the books that sit in a special spot on my shelf, because they are the books that I know I will fall in love with all over again. What a great post, Lisa!!Nadiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14315207186180201488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605456781483914021.post-91161075709752556432010-12-01T22:11:16.043-06:002010-12-01T22:11:16.043-06:00This was the first memoir I had ever read. And the food, or lack of food, still sounded like something you would die to eat. I am not a descriptive writer... this book makes me wish I was. If you can talk about boiling bone in some sort of pot and make me wish I had some? Well done:)Dina Kucerahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05916143062900355146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605456781483914021.post-82776653123900807892010-12-01T10:21:46.186-06:002010-12-01T10:21:46.186-06:00Great review! Very nice, clearly written review! As sad and emotionally draining as this book is, some of my favorite parts are the funny ones - most notably, puking up his first communion in his grandmother's back yard. I laughed out loud for a good few minutes. She sends him to the priest to ask what to do! It was hard not to feel angry at the father for doing this to his family, but in the end, I just had to accept the fact that it was an addiction. I don't think I will ever forget the pink-eye section either! Have you read any of the books by his brother Malachy? I haven't but am curious to find out what they are all about. Frank McCourt also has another book out called 'Tis, and I am interested in reading that one as well. Fabulous and wonderful review of a book that I cherish!Zibileehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05857638467064749190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7605456781483914021.post-91783197350971627892010-12-01T06:59:52.062-06:002010-12-01T06:59:52.062-06:00I remember reading this book and sort of gradually...I remember reading this book and sort of gradually sinking into the floor from the weight of the depressing story! Not that it wasn't good, but it made me sad and angry and all the things a good book should do. I was reminded of it when I tried to watch the movie (but could not even!) The Magdalene Sisters and when I was reading "The Tea Rose" and "The Winter Rose" by jennifer Donnelly. Angela's Ashes is definitely a book that stays with you on some level, even if you can't remember the details!rhapsodyinbookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07041412748239010264noreply@blogger.com
