It may be my favorite eve...Oh how I love this book. It may be my favorite ever haunted house book. You're so right that Shirley Jackson makes everything much scarier by never, never showing her hand. At the end of the book, it could just as easily be that Eleanor's losing it, as that the house is haunted.
