A Month of Faves - Fave "New To Me" Authors

When I started thinking about this prompt, I wondered exactly how many books I'd read by new-to-me authors this year that I'd enjoyed. I knew I had read a lot of second books by authors that I enjoyed and a fair amount of new-to-me authors that underwhelmed me. As it turns out, though, there were quite a few that did impress. Let's just say that you'll likely be seeing some of these on another list later this month. In no particular order, here are seven authors that impressed me enough to make other books they write automatic reads.

1. Rebecca Rotert - Last Night At The Blue Angel

2. Jenny Lawson - Let's Pretend This Never Happened

3. Marlon James - The Book of Night Women

4. Homer Hickam - Carrying Albert Home

5. Anthony Doerr - All The Light We Cannot See

6. Jennifer Egan - A Visit From The Goon Squad

7. Emma Donoghue - Room

What new-to-you authors impressed you this year?

  1. I'm pretty sure A Visit From the Goon Squad made my list of favorites the year I read it... have been meaning to read more of Jennifer Egan ever since. I avoided Room for the longest time, but finally ended up listening and loved it.

    1. I was concerned the focus of Room might be more on the relationship with the abductor and couldn't see how Donoghue could keep an entire book interesting in that setting. Boy, did I underestimate her!

  2. I've heard of many of these but have yet to read perhaps because I think oall of them are outside the crime fiction genre. Maybe sometimes I need to wander outside the genre and try something new.

  3. I'm eager to listen to Jenny Lawson's new book. I really liked Let's Pretend This Never Happened. I believe I downloaded The Book of Night Woman in audio because of you. :-)

    1. Definitely all out of the crime fiction genre. I generally don't read a lot of crime fiction although I generally enjoy what I do read of it. I should probably read more, right?

  4. I really want to read Marlon James. Of course he came fully to my attention because of A Brief History of Seven Killings, but I think The Book of Night Women might be a better place for me to start. Love Donoghue from your list!

    1. Book of Night Women is definitely shorter! "Read" it on audio - excellently read.
