Month of Faves: Books On My Winter Reading List

I know I say this every year but this year I really mean it - in 2016 it's going to be all about reading what I want to read, when I want to read it. Fewer challenges, fewer books for review, more free-range (as Heather of Capricious Reader calls it) reading.

So....as for this winter? I'm making a list of a lot of books I'd like to get to and I'll read as many (or as few) of them as I want to read.

Nonfiction:
The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee
The Mockingbird Next Door by Marja Mills
The Book of Vice by Peter Sagal
The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big-Time College Football by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian
Beyond The Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

Fiction:
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (book club)
A Study In Scarlet and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (book club)
Burning Bright: Stories by Ron Rash
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
+ some selection of mystery/thrillers in March, not sure at all yet what those might be

Audio:
This is completely up for grabs at this point. I need to get to the library to see what they've got available but won't be able to do that until after the first of the year. Perhaps my next audiobook will be something I download from Project Gutenberg. I'm thinking it's time for some Wilkie Collins or some more Anthony Trollope

Notice that there is almost nothing new on this list? That's my other plan for next year - read what you've got. Between the physical books and the ebooks, I've got a lot of great stuff already on hand. Which is not to say that I won't hit up Netgalley here and there or accept books for review; you know I won't be able to resist!

Do you plan ahead on your reading? What's calling to you as winter sets in?

  1. I hope you are able to read as many and exactly what books you want to read this next year, Lisa, and find some unknown treasures as well. :-) I hope you enjoy A Man Called Ove if you read it. It's one of my favorites that I read this year.

    1. Definitely going free range - didn't even pick one of these for my first read of 2016!

  2. Other than the few review copies I have left for January, I have completely stopped planning my reading. On the one hand, it is nice to have the freedom to stop and start whatever I want. On the other hand, with so many books on my shelves from which to choose, it can be overwhelming. I am excited to start tackling my shelves though!

    1. It is a lot harder to choose when you have all of the books on your shelf to choose from!

  3. I know this sounds crazy but I am actually doing the opposite of you!! Only my few challenges and only 2016 pub'd!!! Crazy.

    1. I've kind of gotten to the point where I feel guilty buying new books when there are so many on my bookshelves. I think if I can make a good dent this year, I can justify being able to pick up the new books when I want to.

  4. I have a stack of library books that don't need to be renewed until the second week of January and I'm looking forward to those quiet hours when I can read them! I'm catching up on some new authors and trying to read all they've written in a series which is my planned reading at the moment. Happy reading in the new year Lisa. Thank you for your blog and the ideas you give me for my reading. Wishing you and your family a happy Christmas and a good new year.
