Life: It Goes On - May 17

I'm largely unplugged this weekend - except for the reading I'm doing on either my Nook or the iPad. We're celebrating my dad with a family vacation which means you won't see me around Facebook or Twitter for a couple more days. I'll have stories to tell by next week, I'm sure. With between 15-17 of us in the house at any time, there are certain to be lots of laughs, lots of love and at least one or two things that will become family lore.

This Week I'm:

Listening To: I'm continuing to listen to The Story of Beautiful Girl. It was recommended to me as a book club choice but my crew thought we had enough sadness in our line up. It would make an excellent choice, though.

I've also been listening to podcasts, catching up on some old favorites and discovering some new ones. Have you read Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project? She and her sister have a podcast called "Happier" which I'm really enjoying and picking up some great tips from. For example, Rubin recommends setting an alarm to remind yourself to go to bed at the time you should since most of us don't get enough sleep.

Watching: "The Voice" - next week is the finals but I'm not sure America has moved the best voices into it. "Elementary" - do you watch it? What did you think of that ending?

Reading: I finished Silver Bay and Where Women Are King this week and I've started The Canterbury Sisters and Calling Me Home, which is this month's book club selection.

Making: Egg casseroles, taco soup, popcorn snack mix, pizza, and pancakes for dinner.

Planning: Mostly, I'm planning on using the coming week to recover from the weekend.

Grateful for: My family, of course!

Enjoying: Tell you what I'm not enjoying - rain. Enough already! It's May already - time for sunshine and warm days.

Feeling: Relaxed. I was definitely ready for a few days away from housework and real work.

Looking forward to: A weekend with nothing on the calendar - which will not be any time soon. This is how summer disappears on a person.

  1. Enjoy your family time!!

    SPOILER FOR ELEMENTARY**********

Are we supposed to think that Sherlock has relapsed? He looked awful. After he kicked/killed that guy and he picked up the drugs....well, we were a little puzzled too. Although one would think that Joan would have been a bit more upset. What do you think?

    1. He sure looked like he was strung out but I was thinking the same thing about Joan. But then maybe she was resigned and I can't think why else his dad would be coming.

  2. Put that many relatives together in a house and there is bound to be new "family lore"! That really is the best :)

I loved the audio version of Calling Me Home! It was a favorite a couple years ago. Be forewarned... plan where you are for the ending if you don't want to be embarrassed by tears.

    1. Yep, we've got a lot of new stories! Like so many family stories, though, I'm sure no one else would be nearly as amused. But we'll be laughing for a long time about things like my niece and her "tobacco" in her bloody mary.

  3. Have a wonderful time with your family. I love big family gatherings. We used to have a few every time someone is getting married or when there is a big family occasion, but it has been a while since I've met most of my cousins or aunts.

    1. It was nice to have enough days that we could have a lot of time together but also work in some quiet time. Holidays always feel so rushed and like we're all on top of each other all of the time.

  4. A weekend with nothing on the calendar? Ha! I think our days (weeks AND weekends) are booked solid for the next several weeks. I just have to take things one day at time. We can do this!

    1. Yeah, that weekend isn't coming any time soon! I thought by the time my kids were all out of the house, I'd get bored on weekends. Not so much! Plus, at least one of them is always planning on coming out one or more days of the weekend and even though they're not company, I still feel like I need to stop and spend time with them instead of getting things done or curling up with a book.

  5. I'm not caught up on Elementary yet but there's been a few hints throughout the season that they're really messing with Sherlock and I'm not sure I love that. I'm curious to see what you think of The Canterbury Sisters. I have it but haven't started it yet (story of my life). Have a great week and a fantastic vacation!

    1. Did you ever read any of Erica Bauermeister's books? The Canterbury Sisters is in that same vein, with the group of characters pulled together and then a story from each of them worked in.

  6. This is the third time I'm trying to comment, LOL, so this will be the abbreviated version. I'm still getting caught up on Elementary episodes from when I was moving, but I'm looking forward to the Mad Men finale tonight. Enjoy your family time!

    1. I really feel like Elementary is one that you have got to pay attention to so you don't miss the details added to the characters and the bigger picture. I'd love to watch it all again.

  7. Sounds like another full weekend for you. I wish we could get a little of your rain. It rained an inch here last week in a very short amount of time and you would have thought the world was ending. STORM WATCH 2015.
