Sunday Salon - October 3

What a glorious weekend we've had here but the cooler temps really did drive home the point that fall is here.  I think it may just be time to get out that fall decor, maybe even a few pumpkins and witches!

I haven't been getting nearly as much reading done this weekend as I usually do.  Mini-him arrived early yesterday and spent the whole day with us before heading back to his new digs after the evening football games had wrapped up.  He's only an hour away but I do miss having him around and it was great to have his friends here for the evening as well.

I'm reading To Kill A Mockingbird with Molly, of The Bumbles and really wondering why I've never read it before.  I love the movie and it was hard to get those images out of my head until I started hitting passages that weren't in the movie.  I'm also reading Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow for a TLC Book Tour.  I'm learning so much but it is slow going.

The fall edition of Dewey's 24 Hr Read-A-Thon is coming up this weekend.  I'm signed up to do it again and hoping that I can get enough of the Washington book done before that so that I can treat myself to using that time to read some other things.  I've got some books started that I'd like to finish still, my October book club selection to read, and I'd love to get another couple of books read for review.

What are you reading this week?

  1. I re-read To Kill a Mockingbird each year when I teach it to my 9th graders - and I look forward to the re-read each and every time!

Your weekend sounds fun and relaxing. My son is in LA for an indefinite period of time, and I truly miss having him around. Hopefully he can come home for Thanksgiving.

    Have a great week, Lisa!

  2. It really is time for me to dust of my copy of To Kill a Mockingbird and give it another go. It has been so long! I hope that you have a great week!

  3. I'm reading Lady's Maid and it's slow but nicely captivating. THEN I want to dive into Hermione Lee's Virginia Woolf bio (at almost 800 pages!) and then Woman in White. I'll be lucky to get through all these by the end of the month. LUCKY. I get so intimidated by long books... oh, and I'm listening to Frankenstein for RIP. :)

  4. I recently listened to the audio of To Kill a Mockingbird, read by Sissy Spacek. I read the book long ago in middle school but had forgotten most of it. Spacek's reading is just magnificent -- she really brought the novel to life. I've never seen the movie, but I probably should!

  5. I'm trying to finish The Brothers Karamazov (ugh) and also reading Dorian Gray. I think I need to add in something a little lighter!

  6. Yay! So glad you'll be doing the readathon again. :)

Like Jill I'm still struggling through Brothers Karamazov. I haven't finished a book since August! So pitiful. Hoping to finish at least one or two this weekend of the readathon.

Isn't the cooler weather divine? I just hope it stays this way a little longer--wish October could extend for months and months.

    Enjoy To Kill a Mockingbird!

  7. I feel really bad that I never actually finished To Kill a Mockingbird during th emonth of July like I promised. I was all geared up to do it for the anniversary but I just couldn't get back into it.

  9. Hi Lisa! Can't wait to read your review on Washington (especially since I live on the land they camped on. I get chills all the time thinking that I'm running on the same trails the soldiers walked on). I have learned so much about George since moving to 'Washington Valley'... 100 acres between Mendham and Morris Township (aboutu 5 miles from Jockey Hollow). I bet the book is much like a textbook.

Have you read 1776? It's very good. I might reread this one.

Reading your comment about mini-me made me cry - I miss AWP so much and won't get to see him until winter break.

Can't wait to hear you thoughts on 'The Girls'... there is a slow part in the middle.

  12. I'm still jealous you are experiencing the TKAM book for the first time *sigh* I do love it so! Curious to hear your thoughts about the pieces the movie left out...
