Life: It Goes On - October 20

It's been a tough week mentally. A friend's son has been missing for over a week and I found myself thinking of her and her son a lot. They have had some sightings and the last they knew, he is still in Omaha. As I go through my days, I always have at the back of my mind that I need to keep an eye out for Andrew. Being a parent is the most rewarding but most difficult job in the world; my heart is with my friend and her husband as they deal with this.

I've been looking forward to this fall's Omaha Lit Fest for a year, since I ended up missing last year's event. Friday evening The Big Guy and I went downtown to enjoy the opening party. BG was excited to get to meet Owen King, son of Stephen King and author of Double Feature which we now own a signed copy of but which has been tucked away until Christmas for BG. BG surprised me by having his palm read something I would never have imagine and which I would have been sure he would have put no faith in...until she told him something he rather liked hearing! Sadly, I had some asthma problems yesterday and wasn't able to get down to the panels and didn't get to see Alyssa Nutting!

Here's What I'm:

Listening To: Julia Glass's The Whole World Over. I'm on the fourth disc right now and not loving it. I've read her Three Junes which I only just liked and I See You Everywhere which I wasn't wild about so it may just be that Glass and I don't mesh. Not entirely sure I'll finish this one.

Watching: Oh, this is just silly - I'm watching the same things I watch every week.

Reading: I'm finishing The Light Between Oceans for book club right now then I really need to start my next review book, the latest Wally Lamb book, We Are Water. I've never read anything by Lamb before. Thoughts on his writing?

Making: More pumpkin dump cake on demand and  a chicken pot pie with puff pastry crust (lovely!).

Planning: On pulling out the garden later this week, always so sad to do it. We pick the last of the tomatoes and let them ripen wrapped in newspaper, cut down the basil plants and let them dry and bring in the pots of parsley and oregano.

Grateful for: All of the support I've been getting for my efforts to get myself into a regular exercise routine. My sister and I work out twice a week together and both The Big Guy and Mini-him have also joined him at the YMCA. I'm reminded that I'm kind of competitive at heart and love to try to do just a little bit more, a little bit faster every time I get on the treadmill.

Loving: Having the house decorated for fall.

Thinking: Cats may be more trouble than they are worth. Also, vets need to be open the day after you discover that your cat has taken to peeing on everything in the house. Miss Sookie (yes, she's named after Sookie Stackhouse) is now doing better and I just might let her stay.

Looking forward to: Book club this week - had to move it. Which reminds me, I need to go get cleaning since I'm hosting this month.

What are you looking forward to this week?

  1. How awful on your friend's missing son. That has to be the worst thing that could happen to a parent. I will say some prayers.

It looks like a good week for you. I have a book club this week too. :)

Take care, and thanks for stopping by my review of THE TILTED WORLD. It was good. I hope you get to read it.

  2. Oh :( So sorry to hear about your friend's missing son. I can't imagine, I really can't. I hope he's found, safe and sound, very soon.

I've loved everything that Lamb has written. I can't wait to get a copy of this newest! I hope you enjoy it :D Can't wait to hear!

  3. How awful about your son's friend. What a heartbreaking situation for a parent -- not knowing where he is.

Poor Kitty - she did not mean it, she must have had a urinary issue:(

  4. I cannot even begin to imagine my child missing. A parent's worst nightmare. I'm so sorry for your friend and I too will pray for your friend and her son Andrew.

  5. I hope they find your friend's son soon. That is so horrifying and a terribly harrowing experience. I can't even begin to imagine what it would feel like to be in the position of someone who doesn't know where a loved one is. Sending thoughts and prayers for his family.

  6. Did Sookie have a urinary tract infection or something? Poor thing. Hope she's feeling better and not still peeing everywhere. I hate that...I once banished one of my cats outside for doing that and anyone who knows me, knows I don't believe in letting cats run around outside, but I just couldn't stand the peeing! She promptly deserted us and went to live at the neighbor's house. LOL! By the way, I love the name you gave her. What's the other kitty's name?

I love pumpkin dumpcakes! You reminded me that I need to make one of those soon. I am a certified pumpkin fanatic!

Great job on the weight loss and getting fit. I'm trying to work on that myself. Slow and steady wins the race (I hope).

I really hope your friend finds her son. That is so heartbreaking. Being a mother is the toughest job and it never stops, even after they're grown. I know I will never stop worrying, even when mine leave the nest.

  7. I can understand your concern for your friend's situation. You must be thinking about it all the time and I hope it gets resolved happily. Sorry to hear about the asthma so take care, especially as you have another busy week. I'm sure going to the Omaha Book Festival and getting a signed copy of Owen King's novel to put away for a Christmas present etc. was an enjoyable experience.

  8. My heart goes out to your friend, sure hope her son is safe.

I've listened to a couple of Julia Glass novels. They were good enough, but I never recommend them to friends. Wally Lamb, on the other hand, is a favorite. I've loved all of his novels and hope to get a copy of his latest soon - enjoy!

  9. I adore Lamb's writing. I have his new book as well but haven't started it yet. I just finished the King book and I am deep into Cartwheel right now and almost done with This House is Haunted. I just feel all over the place with my reading these days. I need to spend a few moments figuring out what to read next.

  10. As a parent, I cannot even imagine what your friend is going through. I will continue to pray for her and her son, hoping he finds his way home.

I enjoyed most of the Lamb books I've read. I tried listening to The Hour I First Believed this past summer and just couldn't get into it. I don't know if it was the audio or me. I have a print copy of the book and may try that at some point. How are you liking his latest?

The Light Between Oceans is one I was hoping to read before the end of the year. Not sure that's going to happen. There's still time, but I'm not going to count on it. I hope you enjoy the book.

Poor Sookie! I am glad she is doing better. Did you find out what was wrong? Isn't cat pee the worst? Our new kitten is doing really well. I am still amazed at how fast she's settled in and my older cat has accepted her. He's still not speaking much to me (my older cat), but I'm working on him. :-)

I hope you are feeling better!
